The nearshore areas of the sound
are predominantly rocky. Sunlit shallow bedrock is
covered by dense kelp forest but, as the depth increases
light begins to fade and a more patchy kelp park only
extends down to around 22m.
Below this, rock surfaces are encrusted with red
corraline seaweeds, ther white calcareous scrawls
of tube worms, fine fillegrees of sea firs and sea
mats, Gelatinous sea squirts, multi- coloured anenomes,
cup corals and lamp shells are found, as are fleshy
dead mans fingers and soft sponges which are grazed
by sea urchins and brittlestars
