Local fishing boats trawl in the outer parts of the Sound and set creels for crabs, lobsters and prawns. Salmon, mussel, scallop and oyster farms are located in the three sea lochs and these industries are amongst the most important employers in the area.

At Ardtoe, the Sea Fish Industry Authority Aquaculture Unit has been undertaking research since the 1960s on oyster, mussel, scallop and manila clam mariculture and turbot, halibut and cod farming.
